What We Learned from Innovative Systems’ 2026 Rural Broadband Subscriber Survey

Posted: May 7, 2026

Innovative Systems hosted a webinar on April 2 to present the findings from its latest Rural Broadband Subscriber Survey. Drawing on responses from more than 800 people across the rural United States, the research looks at satisfaction, spending, service preferences, and the tools customers are using in daily life. Not surprisingly, consistent speed and fair pricing remain the strongest drivers of high satisfaction among rural providers, with 69% and 66%, respectively. Meanwhile, 54% of dissatisfied customers cite high fees as a major concern, and 46% point to poor performance.

Communication Still Sets Providers Apart

Text messaging stands out as the preferred way to keep customers informed, especially when service is interrupted or a technician is on the way. During outages, 56% of users prefer text alerts, and a majority across all age groups want installation arrival times sent directly to their phones. For providers, this is a great chance to cut down on frustration, build trust, and create a customer experience that people will remember.

Added Services Can Strengthen Loyalty

Providers looking to stand apart from national competitors may also want to look beyond broadband alone. Services such as cybersecurity and security cameras are linked to higher overall satisfaction, with average ratings reaching 8.2 out of 10. By comparison, customers without added features report an average satisfaction score of 7.0. That gap suggests customers value services that help protect their homes and make their provider relationship feel more complete.

Competition Is Growing

Taken together, the study shows that while rural consumers are open to new technologies, their expectations of broadband providers remain consistent. They want speed that holds up, pricing that feels fair, and communication that respects their time. With 57% of rural residents open to cellular-based home internet and 43% willing to consider Amazon’s low-Earth orbit satellite service if price and reliability are comparable, local providers have strong reason to keep sharpening that value. The opportunity is not simply to offer broadband, but to remain the trusted provider rural communities know they can count on.
