Making an Impact Starts at the Local Level
Tennessee Broadband Association (TNBA) members are dedicated to making a difference. We prove that by showing up where others won’t, by meeting with legislators, contacting representatives, and traveling to our nation’s capital to demand attention for issues that concern our own communities. But our members also know that the most fundamental way to make an impact is by serving their small localities on a grassroots level.
Several members have focused on honoring and supporting first responders. WK&T recognized local fire departments with a firefighter appreciation breakfast, while United Communications provides free internet service to multiple volunteer fire departments and first responders. United also launched free downtown Wi-Fi in communities, including Shelbyville, Franklin, Petersburg, and Lewisburg, helping overcome poor mobile coverage while keeping residents, visitors, and local businesses connected.
Education and youth leadership are other cornerstones of member outreach. DTC Communications recently engaged with students from Smith County Youth Leadership, discussing how technology and communication shape the world around them. Scholarship programs further extend that impact. The Loretto Telecom Legacy Scholarship honors 125 years of service by awarding $2,000 annually to graduating seniors, while United Communications expanded its scholarship program to include students across its service area and doubled its awards to $2,000 last year.
Members also give back through charitable initiatives and community recognition. Ben Lomand Connect supported a holiday food drive by donating 50 cents per item collected, up to $5,000. DTC Communications’ 10 Days of Gratitude Giveaway celebrated customers with $5,000 in prizes, and NCTC’s Community Service Award honors an outstanding individual each year with a $1,000 donation to the recipient’s favorite charity.
Large-scale investments are also making a lasting difference. Through the Twin Lakes Difference Grant, Twin Lakes and the Foundation for Rural Service awarded approximately $110,000 to 26 local organizations in 2024, supporting schools, fire departments, museums, and economic development efforts across the Upper Cumberland region. It also donated $3 per student enrolled at every K-8 school in the cooperative’s local service area.
Community giving remains a constant focus. From food drives and customer appreciation initiatives to recognizing outstanding community volunteers, members consistently find ways to give back and celebrate the people who make their communities thrive. Together, these initiatives highlight a shared commitment among broadband providers to strengthen communities, expand opportunity, and ensure that the connection extends well beyond the network.
