Internet Providers Must Begin Displaying Broadband Labels This Year

The label is the result of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Broadband Label Order which went into effect in late 2022. These rules require providers to make consumer-friendly labels, which disclose information about broadband speeds and prices, introductory rates, and data allowances. The FCC dictates the labels should also include links to network practice information, the Affordable Connectivity Program, and privacy policies.

Most providers must display this information at online and in-store points of sale by April 10. Those who serve 100,000 subscriber lines or fewer have until October 10 to meet the requirement.

The FCC is requiring adoption of these practices as a way to empower customers to choose services to best fit their budgets and needs while eliminating surprise charges or service quality that does not meet their expectations. The commission believes consumer access to clear, accurate information is essential to a marketplace that fosters innovation, competition, and quality service.
