Pets rule at Woodbury Veterinary Hospital

Growing up on a dairy farm, Lewanda Lance Jordan always loved animals. She had her first job cleaning out animal cages when she was 14 years old, and dreamed of one day owning a veterinary hospital.

She made that dream a reality when she opened Woodbury Veterinary Hospital, a companion pet practice, in August 2010. “Our veterinarians and staff put our patients and their owners first, and our daily goal is to treat our clients and patients with the same respect and compassion that we would like to receive,” Jordan says.

High-Tech Pet Care

The care pets receive at Woodbury Veterinary Hospital begins with some of the most up-to-date technology available to help pinpoint diagnoses and ensure the safety and comfort of animals being boarded at the facility.

A customer of DTC Communications, the practice uses its fast fiber internet connection to monitor the hospital and boarding areas when staff isn’t on-site. The security system’s cameras provide a look at the clinic, 24/7. “This gives us peace of mind,” Jordan says.

Internet technology also plays a role in providing quicker and more in-depth testing for bloodwork and urinalysis for a more specific diagnosis, along with digital X-rays that can be sent to specialists via email as needed.

By embracing technology, Woodbury Veterinary Hospital not only makes the job better of caring for animals, it helps ensure better outcomes for its four-legged patients and their families. “Our technology allows for a quick turnaround time and that enables our veterinarians to give you a diagnosis and start treatment on the same day,” Jordan says. “That’s all the better for quickly getting your pet back to normal.”

The animal hospital’s website also provides an online pharmacy, new patient registration and additional information that assists owners in caring for their pets following procedures. “Our doctors and staff strive every day to give our patients the best care possible using the most up-to-date services available in veterinary medicine,” Jordan says. “Having access to fast, reliable internet service has made a tremendous difference in the services we provide.”

Full-Service Practice

Among those services Woodbury Veterinary Hospital offers are bathing, microchipping and overall wellness care to procedures such as dental care, heartworm testing, in-clinic diagnostics, laser therapy, pharmacy, radiography and surgery.

“We want to keep your pets healthy by preventing them from getting sick,” Jordan says, stressing heartworm disease can be prevented if caught early. “This is one disease that we can definitely prevent through annual testing and following a preventive treatment program.”

The fast results from diagnostic testing can detect infections and anemia, determine electrolyte status and hydration levels, check blood sugar levels, evaluate kidney and thyroid function, as well as pinpoint a variety of parasites. Other procedures such as regular dental cleanings and exams  help maintain a pet’s health.

The animal hospital can also provide pet owners with peace of mind in the event that Buster breaks free from the backyard. Microchipping is a safe, simple method of identification that can significantly increase the chance of locating a missing pet. A microchip about the size and shape of a grain of rice is implanted beneath the animal’s skin in a process similar to a vaccination. The procedure takes only a few minutes and can be completed during any visit to Woodbury Veterinary Hospital.

Boarding and bathing are increasingly popular services because of the comfortable climate and humidity controlled facilities. Cats and dogs are boarded separately, and staff members spend quality time with each pet, walking dogs several times a day. Kennel runs are large enough that there is plenty of room for pets to move around or stretch out. All boarding guests are required to be up to date on vaccinations. Space fills up quickly, so reservations are recommended. “We supply plenty of TLC, and we make sure all our animals have a pleasant, stress-free stay,” Jordan says.

Meet the Staff

Jordan grew up in Morrison and earned  a bachelor’s degree in animal and dairy sciences from Auburn University in 1999 and continued her education at the university’s veterinary school, earning a doctorate of veterinary medicine in 2004. She returned to Tennessee and worked at Coffee Veterinary Hospital in Manchester until she opened her own practice in 2010.

When Jordan opened Woodbury Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Diane Bruner joined her staff with a special interest in working on difficult medical cases and educating clients. Bruner earned a bachelor‘s degree in biomedical science from Texas A&M University and her doctorate from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

The doctors and other Woodbury Veterinary Hospital staff members are pet owners themselves.

Jordan and her husband, David, have three children, and the family has a collection of goats, chickens, dogs and cats. Bruner and her husband, Michael Hoover, also a veterinarian, have three adult children. The family has seven dogs, many cats, miniature donkeys, goats and chickens.

“Ultimately, what sets our hospital apart from all others is that we sincerely care,” Jordan says. “We get to know our clients on a personal level, and we know their pets by name because to us they are family, and we have their best interests at heart.”
